I think it is important to note here that I didn’t know the author is a Youtuber and I’ve never heard of her story before. I have picked up this book, while I was searching for some non-fiction read. The book’s premise as well as the lovely cover are the reasons why I picked the book in the first place.

That said, the story itself is a very sympathetic and simple read, it is a personal memoir that contains story of funny life moments, struggles with sexuality, self-denial and finally self-acceptance. The story is lightly written, it was a very quick and enjoyable read. The memoir first follows Lucy’s life and realisation of her sexuality, the struggles it comes with, later on focusing on her relationship with Kaelyn, university and embracing the person who she really is.

I think this story is very important, especially for LGBT community, as it is relatable. It is filled with many self-acceptance advices and it shows how Lucy has overcome the daily struggles of her insecurity and homophobia she faced. It includes Lucy’s coming out story and it also shows you there is many people who face a discrimination on a daily basis. Even thou the story is touching on all those subjects, it is not explored into any greater details. By that I mean, the author doesn’t really go into much detail regarding issues she faced as well as later on her relationship with Kaelyn. Nonetheless, I think it is a very good read, but it has to be said that it is a personal memoir, not a guide book. Self-acceptance advice may be helpful to some, but ultimately it is Lucy’s story, not guidelines to follow.

The book gives hope, it deals with issues not a lot of people are comfortable to talk about: anxiety, self-hate, self-doubt, struggling with sexuality. However it is not powerful. It is not a literary masterpiece. It’s a simple story that will get you started. It is not what I was looking for, but I’m sure it gave courage and hope to others, especially younger readers.
